The Black Creek Research and Training Watershed is a hub for investigating hydrology and pollution in a highly urbanized environment. Waters of the Black Creek flow through the cities of Vaughan and Toronto, eventually joining the Humber River before draining into Lake Ontario. Intensive research in the watershed, led by Claire Oswald, started in 2021, with efforts growing to include initiatives led by Faculty from Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto (see below). The collective goals of the Black Creek Research and Training Watershed are to better understand urban streamflow and contaminant transport, train future scientists interested in urban systems, respond to community concerns about the creek with targeted investigations, and to generate a body of knowledge about the Black Creek to facilitate inter-comparison with other urban research watersheds. Work in the watershed is facilitated by collaboration, permitting, and data-sharing with the City of Toronto, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, and the Water Survey of Canada.
